1. COMO FOI SEU PRIMEIRO CONTATO COM A FALCOARIA E POR QUE VOCÊ DECIDIU SE JUNTAR A ESTA ARTE ANTIGA?
Eu acredito que eu nasci para caçar. Nós somos todos caçadores natos. Esta é a nossa tradição e a nossa vocação. Esta vocaçãofoi particularmente forte em mim e eu decidi aos 12 anos de idade que eu iria me tornar uma caçadora, seguindo a nossa tradição famíliar. Eu obtive a licença de caça alemã com 16 anos de idade, tiro e caça com cães. Havia algo sobre falcões que me cativou. Eles eram os verdadeiros reis do céu. O que sempre me fascinou, foi a relação humana com os animais. A parceria. Juntos, formamos parcerias que não são mesmo naturais, por exemplo, com um cavalo, um cão e um falcão. Esses são animais que teria naturalmente medo de nós, mas nós treinamos e tornamos eles uma equipe de caça imbatível.
Já ouvi histórias de grandes falcoeiros na Alemanha e apenas imaginava como seria bom ter minhas próprias histórias. Era como um sonho de ouvi-las. Uma noite, enquanto dirigia para casa, parei para olhar o que estava na estrada. Era um falcão-peregrino. Ele tinha acabado de ser atropelado por um caminhão. Apanhei-o e segurou esta criatura majestosa em minhas mãos quentes em uma noite fria de inverno, enquanto ele tomava seu último suspiro. A vida selvagem do rei dos céus foi morto pela civilização. Fiquei arrasada por testemunhar esta tragédia e ser incapaz de fazer qualquer coisa sobre isso.
Afetada para sempre por esse momento, eu decidi que um dia vou ser uma falcoeira.
1. HOW WAS YOUR FIRST CONTACT WITH FALCONRY AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THIS ANCIENT ART?
I believe I was born to hunt. We are all born hunters. This is our tradition and our calling. This calling was particularly strong in me and I have decided at the age of 12 that I will become a hunter, following our families tradition. I have obtained the German hunting license at the age of 16, taking up shooting and hunting with dogs. There was something about falcons that captivated me. They were the true kings of the sky. What has always fascinated me, was the human relationship with animals. The partnership. Together we form partnerships that are not even natural, for example with a horse, a dog and a falcon. Those are animals that would naturally be scared of each other, but we train them and make them an unbeatable hunting team.
I have heard stories of great falconers in Germany and just imagined how great it would be to have one of my own. It was like a dream listening to these stories. One night I drove home on the highway, and stopped to look what was on the road. It was a peregrine falcon. It was just hit by a truck. I picked it up and held this majestic creature in my warm hands on a cold winter night, while it was taking its last breath. A wild life of the king of the skies was killed by civilization. I was devastated by witnessing this tragedy and being unable to do anything about it.
Forever impacted by this moment, I decided that one day I will be a falconer.

2. QUAIS FORAM SEUS PRIMEIROS PASSOS COMO INICIANTE? VOCÊ TEVE AJUDA DE ALGUÉM?
Comecei a comprar livros de falcões para começar a aprender tanto quanto eu podia sobre eles. Sobre sua natureza, biologia, psicologia e seus métodos de treinamento. Enquanto eu estava lendo, meus amigos mais próximos começaram a ver a paixão que eu tinha para estas aves de rapina. Minha querida amiga Fatma do Qatar sentiu que essa paixão precisava de um empurrão extra. Ela foi uma das primeiras amizades Qatari que fiz logo depois de me mudar para o Qatar, e apesar de me conhecer por apenas alguns meses, ela sentiu a minha paixão e queria me apoiar. Ela providenciou uma fêmea de falcão (kestrel) e um dia em um jantar na minha casa, ela apareceu com uma grande gaiola com um falcão dentro. Eu simplesmente não podia acreditar! No entanto, ela não era a única que sabia sobre falcões ou que poderia me ensinar. Ela foi a pessoa que me empurrou para este mundo da falcoaria real, longe dos livros.
Stephan Wunderlich, um falcoeiro da Alemanha, começou a me dar conselhos pelo whatsapp. Fomos apresentados por um amigo. Ele foi uma ajuda incrível, mas foi realmente difícil de entender o que eu estava fazendo certo e o que estava errado com apenas ajuda remota. Então, eu procurei por um mentor Qatari para me ajudar no campo frente a frente.
Esta foi uma tarefa bastante difícil, mas felizmente eu encontrei o mentor perfeito que iria me mostrar como treinar o meu falcão. Salim Sultan Al Humeidi, não estava convencido de primeira. Ele não só achava que eu não sabia e não entendia o conceito por trás de caça com aves de rapina, mas ele não acreditava nas minhas capacidades. Além disso, ele não estava disposto a treinar-me inicialmente, como ele não falava Inglês, eu não falava árabe e seu círculo para de treinamento é um grupo familiar muito reduzido. Eu insisti em meu treinamento com ele e ele acabou concordando, convencido de que depois que eu visse a falcoaria de verdade, eu não continuaria o treinamento. Para sua surpresa eu fui dedicada desde o primeiro dia e não parei um único dia de treinar o meu falcão. Cancelei os planos de viagens e outros compromissos para ser totalmente dedicada ao treinamento da minha falcão.
Salim não só ficou surpreso com a minha dedicação, mas ele viu que a paixão que eu tinha me ajudou a aprender rapidamente e aplicar o que ele me ensinou. Passo a passo, eu me tornei uma falcoeira, e também parte de sua família, com quem ainda treino junto até hoje. Trocamos experiências, treinamos juntos e ajudamos uns aos outros. Mesmo que eles tenham visto falcões desde que nasceram, e essa tradição foi transmitida por seus antepassados, eles continuam aprendendo como todos nós fazemos. Isto é bonito de experienciar.
2. WHICH WERE YOUR FIRST STEPS AS A BEGINNER? DID YOU HAVE HELP OF SOMEONE?
I started buying books of falcons to start learning as much as I could about them. About their nature, their biology, their psychology and training methods. While I was reading, my closer friends started seeing the passion I had for these birds of prey. My dear friend Fatma from Qatar sensed that this passion needed an extra push. She was one of the first Qatari friends I made very shortly after moving to Qatar, and despite knowing me for only a few months she sensed my passion and wanted to support me. She arranged a female kestrel and one day at a dinner party at my house, she just turned up with a big cage and a kestrel sitting inside. I could simply not believe it! However, she was not the one who knew about falcons or who could teach me. She was the one who pushed me into this world of real falconry, away from the books.
Stephan Wunderlich, a falconer from Germany started giving me advice over whatsapp. We were introduced by a common friend. He was an amazing help, but it was really hard to understand what I was doing right and what wrong with only remote help. I then searched for a Qatari mentor to help me on the ground and one to one.
This was quite a challenging task, but luckily I found the perfect mentor who would show me how to train my falcon. Salim Sultan Al Humeidi, was not convinced at first. He did not only think I did not know and understand the hunting concept behind birds of prey, but he did not believe in my capabilities. Also he was not willing to train me at first, as he did not speak any English, I did not speak any Arabic and his circle for training is a very reduced family group. I insisted on my training by him and he eventually agreed, being convinced that after I see what it is really about I would not continue training. Much to his surprise I was dedicated from day one and did not stop a single day to train my falcon. I cancelled travel arrangements and other commitments to be fully dedicated to the training of my falcon.
Salim was not only surprised by my dedication, but he saw the passion I had helped me to quickly learn and apply what he taught me. Step by step I became a falconer, and also a part of his family that I am still training with today. We exchange experiences, train together and help each other. Even though they have seen falcons since they were born, and this tradition was passed on by their forefathers, they continue learning as we all do. This is beautiful to experience.
3. PARA OS INICIANTES DESTA ARTE ESPECIAL, O QUE VOCÊ RECOMENDARIA?
Eu recomendo encontrar um mentor. Devemos ter uma mente aberta e um coração aberto para aprender não só do nosso mentor, mas do próprio falcão que estamos treinando. A partir do meio ambiente, a partir dos livros que lemos, a partir das histórias que são contadas e observando tantos outros falcoeiros magníficos. Nós cometemos erros o tempo todo, mas enquanto estamos abertos para aprender e continuar aprendendo, vamos encontrar maneiras de melhorar. Os piores erros são aqueles com os quais não aprendemos nada.
3. FOR THE BEGINNERS OF THIS SPECIAL ART, WHAT DO YOU RECOMEND?
I highly recommend to find a mentor. We should have an open mind and an open heart to learn not only from our mentor, but from the falcon himself we are training. From the environment, from the books we read, from the stories we are told and by watching so many other magnificent falconers. We make mistakes all the time, but as long as we are open to learn and to continue learning, we will find ways to improve. The worst mistakes are the ones we do not learn from.

4. VOCÊ É DA ALEMANHA E PODEMOS VER FOTOS BONITAS SUAS NO QATAR. VOCÊ SE MUDOU POR CAUSA DA FALCOARIA OU FOI POR TRABALHO?
Eu caçava na Alemanha, até que me mudei para a Espanha para os meus estudos universitários. Lá continuei a caça com armas e cães. Devido a razões profissionais que me mudei para Doha, Qatar.
Meus amigos da Alemanha foram os primeiros a dizer "Laura, esta será a oportunidade de, finalmente, ser uma falcoeira. É a terra de falcões!”
Meus olhos brilharam, e eu lembrei do meu sonho de ser uma falcoeira. Algo que eu esqueci temporariamente com todas os aborrecimentos da mudança e de administração. Pouco depois de se mudar, eu comecei a fazer perguntas sobre falcões. Eu encontrei uma caixa de transporte para aves de rapina de falcoaria em Katara - Doha, Qatar, mas estava vázia. Eu também achei o mercado dos falcões no Souq Waqif. E eu comprei mais livros sobre falcoaria. Eu, contudo, não me senti confortável o suficiente para comprar um falcão. Felizmente Fatma me deu um empurrãozinho, trazendo um falcão como presente. O melhor presente que eu poderia imaginar até hoje. Ele foi definitivamente o início de realizar o meu sonho.
4. YOU´RE FROM GERMANY, AND WE CAN SEE BEAUTIFUL PICTURES IN QATAR . DID YOU MOVE BECAUSE OF FALCONRY OR IT WAS FOR A JOB?
I have been hunting in Germany, until I moved to Spain for my University studies. There I continued hunting by gun and with dogs. Due to professional reasons I moved to Doha, Qatar. My friends from Germany were the first ones to say “Laura this will be your opportunity to finally be a falconer. Its the land of falcons!”
My eyes lit up, and I remembered my dream to be a falconer. Something I temporarily forgot with all the moving and administration hassles. Little after moving, I started asking questions about falcons. I found the falconry hood in Katara - Doha, Qatar, but it was just built and still empty. I also found the falcon market at the souq waqif. And I bought more books on falconry. I did not however feel comfortable enough to buy a falcon. Luckily Fatma pushed me by bringing one falcon as a gift. The best gift I could imagine til today. It was definitely the beginning of fulfilling my dream.
5. Por favor, você pode descrever para nós como é a sensação de voar um falcão no deserto do Qatar?
O deserto é algo que me cativou. É um lugar onde eu posso encontrar serenidade e recarregar minhas energias. O vasto espaço nos dá uma sensação especial de liberdade. Não há cercas, não há sinais de invasão de propriedade. É um grande espaço aberto. A luz do sol que reflete na areia e pedras do deserto é incrível. Voar um falcão nesta luz e sob o sol é simplesmente incrível. Eu já vi isso um milhão de vezes e ainda tira o meu fôlego cada vez que eu vou para o deserto e vejo um falcão abrindo suas asas e alcançando o céu, perseguindo ambiciosamente sua presa.
5.Please, can you describe for us how is the feeling of flying a falcon in the Qatari desert?
The desert is something that has captivated me. It is a place where I can find serenity and recharge my energy. The vast space give us a special empowerment of freedom. There are no fences, no signs of trespassing not allowed. It is wide open space. The sunlight that reflects on the sand and stones of the desert is amazing. Flying a falcon in this light and over the sun is simply stunningly beautiful. I have seen it a million times and yet it takes my breath away every single time I come to the desert and see a falcon spread its wings and reach the sky, chasing ambitiously its prey.
6. COMO FOI SUA RECEPÇÃO NO QATAR? EXISTE MUITAS FALCOEIRAS NO PAÍS?
Minha recepção foi incrivelmente acolhedora e recebi apoio de todos, apesar de terem grandes dúvidas quanto as minhas alegações de habilidades de caça e meu sonho de me tornar uma falcoeira. Era difícil para eles acreditarem, eu poderia caçar com arma ou treinar animais para caçar, como os falcões. Eles viram que eu posso não só fazer isso, mas que eu podia sobreviver no deserto. Eu sei como procurar trilhas, dormir no deserto, fazer fogo, caçar e não só honrar a presa morta, mas também cozinhá-la bem. Assim que eles viram que eu posso fazer isso, eles têm aprendido a me respeitar. Um respeito que ganhei ao longo do tempo, ao demonstrar minha dedicação e paixão diariamente para esta arte antiga.
Beduínos que consideram uns aos outros homens muito fortes, resistentes e respeitosos, chamam uns aos outros de “Thib", o que significa lobo. Eles acreditam que um lobo é um animal forte e honrado. A maior forma de respeito que foi mostrado à mim, foi quando Qataris começaram a me chamar "Thiba", a loba. Isto demonstrou o seu respeito nas minhas habilidades de caça, que eu estava honrada e não tenho medo de nada, resistente o suficiente para sobreviver no deserto.
Aqui no Qatar, eu era a primeira-dama e primeira estrangeira a formar uma equipe de caça para a competição de caça tradicional beduina Qtari "Al Galayel". Isto não foi apenas um grande avanço, mas a forma mais oficial de mostrar respeito por mim e minhas habilidades de caça. Ao mesmo tempo que era minha oportunidade de mostrar o quanto eu amo o Qatar, o meu país anfitrião, suas pessoas maravilhosas, e as suas tradições beduínas únicas, como eu integralmente aprendi árabe, aprendendo sua herança e os modos de caça específicos. Foi uma experiência muito especial e estou muito grata por esta oportunidade e a confiança que foi depositada em mim.
Portanto, eu não tenho somente o orgulho de ser chamada de "Thiba" por alguns, mas também por 'usar' o meu apelido: “da Arábia”. Obrigada árabes do Qatar, Emirados e outros por me hospedar em seus países, convidando-me à sua família e me mostrando sua tradição.
6. How was your reception in Qatar? Is there a lot of female falconers in the country?
My reception was incredibly welcoming and supporting overall, although they had major doubts in my claim for hunting skills and my dream to become a falconress. It was hard for them to believe, I could hunt by gun or train animals such as falcons to hunt. They have seen, that I can not only do that, but that I can survive in the desert. I know how to search trails, sleep in the desert, make fire, hunt and not only honour the killed prey, but cook it as well. As soon as they have seen I can do that, they have grown to respect me. A respect I have earned over time, by demonstrating my dedication and passion on a daily basis for this ancient art.
Bedouins that consider each other very strong, tough and respectful men, call each other ‘Thib”, which means wolf. They believe a wolf to be a strong, but honourable animal. The biggest form of respect that was shown to me, was when Qataris started calling me “Thiba”, the She-Wolf. This demonstrated their respect in my hunting abilities, that I was honourable and not scared of anything, tough enough to survive in the desert.
Here in Qatar, I was the first lady and very first foreigner to form a hunting team for the Qatari Bedouin traditional hunting competition “Al Galayel”. This was not only a breakthrough, but the most official way of showing respect for me and my hunting skills. At the same time it was my opportunity to show how much I love Qatar, my host country, its wonderful people, and its unique bedouin traditions, by how I integrated learning Arabic, learning their heritage and specific hunting ways. It was a very special experience and I am very grateful for this opportunity and the trust that was placed in me.
Therefore I am not only proud to be called ‘Thiba” by some, but also to ‘wear’ my alias name: ‘of Arabia’. Thanking Arabs of Qatar, Emirates and others for hosting me in their countries, inviting me to their family and showing me their tradition.
7. COMO VOCÊ AVALIA A EVOLUÇÃO DAS MULHERES NA FALCOARIA PELO MUNDO AFORA?
Eu não vejo uma evolução em tudo, nem uma necessidade para ela. Nós somos uma parte da falcoaria desde o início. Nós nunca fomos excluídas da falcoaria. Por uma questão de fato, nunca fomos excluídas da caça. A maioria dos registros em todo o mundo sugerem mulheres como parte de grupos de caça e falcoaria desde os tempos antigos. A evolução é a forma do treinamento, sob a forma de criação de animais e as formas de caça.
7. HOW DO YOU EVALUATE THE EVOLUTION OF WOMAN FALCONRY WORLDWIDE?
I don’t see an evolution at all, nor a need for it. We are a part of falconry ever since the beginning. We have never been excluded from falconry. As a matter of fact we have never been excluded from hunting. Most records across the world suggest woman as part of hunting parties and falconry from ancient times. The evolution is the form of training, the form of breeding and the forms of hunting.
8. MUITOS FALCOEIROS PARTICIPAM DE ED. AMBIENTAL PELO MUNDO. QUAL É A IMPORTÂNCIA DESSES PROJETOS PARA A CONSERVAÇÃO DO FUTURO DA FALCOARIA E DAS AVES DE RAPINA?
Tenho realizado uma demonstração de falcoaria na Northwestern University em Qatar e no Qatar Education Foundation City. Bem como outras demonstrações de voo em outras ocasiões com grupos reduzidos. Também falei sobre a falcoaria no National History Group Qatar. Para além destes eventos oficialmente organizados, eu falo sobre falcoaria para adultos e crianças, tanto quanto eu posso, a fim de criar consciência. A educação é essencial para manter a falcoaria e garantir um futuro para salvar esta arte antiga.
8. MANY FALCONERS PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS IN THE WORLD. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE PROJECTS FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE FUTURE OF FALCONRY AND FOR THE BIRDS OF PREY?
I have conducted a demonstration of falconry at the Northwestern University in Qatar at the Qatar Foundation Education City. As well as other flight demonstrations at other occassions with reduced groups. I have also talked about falconry at the Qatar National History Group. Apart from these officially organized events, I talk about falconry to adults and kids alike as much as I can, in order to create awareness. Education is essential to maintain falconry and ensuring a save future for this ancient art.

No, not yet, but I hope to have the opportunity to do so in the near future.
10. COMO VOCÊ VÊ A PARTICIPAÇÃO DAS MULHERES NA FALCORIA MUNDIAL?
Eu vejo mulher em todo o mundo participando de falcoaria. Esta é a forma como foi no passado e é assim que deve continuar a ser.
10. HOW DO YOU SEE THE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN FALCONRY IN THE WORLD?
I see woman all over the world participating in falconry. This is how it has been in the past and this is how it should continue to be.
11. QUAIS SÃO OS MAIORES DESAFIOS PARA UMA FALCOEIRA?
Quando pensamos que somos diferentes. Nós temos dois olhos, duas mãos e uma mente tão forte como uma rocha. Por que deveria haver quaisquer desafios maiores do que para um falcoeiro?
11. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FOR A WOMAN FALCONER?
When we think we are different. We have two eyes, two hands and a mind as strong as a rock. Why should there be any bigger challenges than for a male falconer?

12 - VOCÊ ACHA QUE EXISTE "MACHISMO" E "PRECONCEITO" DE FALCOEIROS COM FALCOEIRAS?
Provavelmente há, e quanto mais nós nos separarmos em grupos de falcoaria femininos, mais nutriremos isso. Estamos construindo uma barreira. Eu tento quebrar essas barreiras, pedindo a todos para se concentrar apenas na caça e na falcoaria, garantindo concentração no que é mais importante.
Preconceitos sempre vão existir. Contra um gênero específico, uma raça, um grupo político, uma religião, um grupo de idade e qualquer outra coisa que se pode ter preconceito contra. É dentro de si mesmo que quebramos essas barreiras do preconceito e para não cometer o mesmo erro nós mesmos.
Muitas pessoas me perguntam como é viver em um país árabe, porque consideram os homens árabes como machistas. Isso não é um preconceito em si? Bem, posso dizer-lhe que era o meu próprio pai alemão que não acreditava nas minhas capacidades como caçadora. Ele foi o primeiro que eu surpreendi com a obtenção da licença alemã de caça por eu passar em todos os exames e testes práticos de tiro e com o abate bem-sucedido de um cervo.
Eu não deixo o preconceito me definir. Eu faço o que for preciso para viver a minha paixão. Eu não estava autorizada para me juntar a Al Galayel não apenas pelos motivos de que sou mulher, mas também porque sou uma estrangeira. Eu quebrei essa barreira, por ter afirmado que eu sou uma residente deste país, não só por ter direitos iguais, mas também com um amor pelo meu país anfitrião, seu povo e sua tradição, que certamente deve exceder a importância da minha origem ou sexo. E excedeu.
12 - DO YOU THINK THERE IS A "MALE CHAUVINIST" AND "PREJUDICE" OF FALCONERS WITH WOMAN FALCONER?
There probably is, and the more we separate into female falconry groups the more we might nourish this. We are building a barrier. I try to break these barriers down, by asking everyone to just focus on hunting and falconry we ensure to concentrate on what is most important.
Prejudices will always exist. Against a specific gender, a race, a political group, a religion, an age group and anything else that one can have prejudice against. It is within oneself to break these prejudice barriers and to not make the same mistake ourselves.
Many people ask me how it is living in an Arab country, because they consider Arab men as particularly chauvinistic. Is that not a prejudice in itself? Well, I can tell you it was my own German father that did not believe in my capabilities as a hunter. He was the first one I surprised with obtaining the German hunting license by passing all the exams and practical shooting test and with the successful killing of a deer.
I don’t let prejudice define me. I do whatever it takes to live my passion. I was not aloud to join Al Galayel not only on the grounds that I am female, but that I am a foreigner. I have broken down this barrier, by stating that I am a resident of this country, with not only equal rights, but with a love for my host country its people and its tradition that it must surely exceed the importance of my origin or gender. And it did.

13 - WHICH BIRDS ARE YOUR FAVORITES?

Obrigada por me dar a oportunidade de expressar os meus pontos de vista e de partilhar as minhas experiências de falcoaria com vocês. Esta vida é uma viagem. Uma emocionante viagem que nos leva a lugares diferentes, e para pessoas diferentes. As pessoas com quem partilhamos nossas lutas, bem como nossos momentos mais felizes.
Ao mesmo tempo, algumas pessoas, nem sempre, vão acreditar em nós ou apoiar-nos. Em algum momento sua luta para obter a atenção de alguém, a sua aprovação ou apoio. Tanto um homem pode desanimá-la e tentar te impedir de prosseguir com a sua paixão, quanto pode uma mulher fazê-lo, infelizmente. Existe uma grande quantidade de inveja neste mundo e preconceito. Não deixe que isso te pare ou fique no seu caminho.
Falcoaria, como muitas outras coisas, é sobre compartilhar o conhecimento teórico e a experiência prática para ajudar uns aos outros a melhorar. É sobre compartilhar nossas experiências magníficas com esses caçadores dos céus. Estou ansiosa para compartilhar esta jornada com vocês aqui e esperamos que em breve não só a troca de experiências, mas a criação de momentos memoráveis juntas. Porque a vida são momentos.
Faça o máximo proveito dela! Crie quantos momentos você puder. Essas são as memórias que você irá estimar para sempre.

Dear Female Falconers of Brazil -
thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my views and to share my experiences of falconry with you. This life is a journey. An exciting journey that takes us to different places, and to different people. People with whom we share our struggles as well as our happiest moments.
At the same time, some people will not always believe in us and or support us. Sometime its a struggle to get someones attention, their approval or support. As much as a man can put you down and stop trying to pursue your passion, so can a woman unfortunately. There is a lot of jealousy in this world and prejudice. Dont let this stop you or get in your way.
Falconry, as many other things, are about sharing the theoretical knowledge and the practical experience to help each other improve. It is about sharing our magnificent experiences with these hunters of the skies. I look forward to sharing this journey with you here and hopefully soon not only exchange experiences, but creating memorable moments together. Because life are moments.
Make the most out of it! Create as many moments as you can. Those are the memories you will cherish forever.
